Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
459 AM PDT Sun Jun 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures across the region will continue to climb
as a ridge of high pressure builds over the area. Temperatures
will peak on Monday and Tuesday, when an Extreme Heat Warning will
go into effect for portions of the Mojave Desert. Moisture across
the southern Great Basin will become trapped under the ridge, with
isolated terrain based convection possible each afternoon into
early next week. Temperatures will slowly decrease during the
second half of the week, with breezy southwesterly winds in the
afternoons as disturbances roll through the Great Basin.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday.

Temperatures will continue to climb over the next few days as
ridging builds over the western US. Temperatures will top out around
5 to 15 degrees above normal across the region on Monday and
Tuesday, yielding widespread Major HeatRisk (Level 3 of 4) across
portions of the Mojave Desert. As such, the Extreme Heat Watch for
Tuesday has been upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning and will now
begin on Monday morning, running through Tuesday evening. Major
HeatRisk will impact everyone without effective cooling or adequate
hydration. Those with outdoor plans on Monday and Tuesday should
consider moving plans to the morning or evening when temperatures
will be cooler. If plans cannot be moved then proper steps should be
taken to help protect yourself from the sun and mitigate any adverse
heat impacts.

Lingering moisture over the Great Basin will become trapped under
the high pressure ridge, resulting in chances for isolated terrain
based convection across the southern Great Basin each afternoon for
the next few days. The dry lower-levels of the atmosphere will make
it difficult for precipitation from any convection that does develop
to make it to the ground. As such, precipitation totals will be
minimal with virga likely. Erratic outflow winds and lightning will
be the primary hazards with any convection that develops over the
next few days.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday.

After the hot start to the week, temperatures will remain above
normal midweek, though slowly start moderating. Ensembles indicate a
shortwave progged to quickly move eastward across northern
California and the Great Basin on Wednesday, flattening the ridge
and resulting in slightly cooler temperatures. This shortwave would
also be accompanied by a slight uptick in Pacific moisture, thus if
it materializes, another afternoon of showers and thunderstorms will
be possible across the Southern Great Basin. However, will hold off
on any sweeping changes to the otherwise dry forecast midweek
onward, pending continuity among ensemble guidance. Otherwise,
ensembles and cluster analyses do remain in agreement regarding the
transition to southwesterly flow aloft Thursday into next weekend as
a large-scale trough develops over the West Coast. While a bulk of
the energy associated with this trough remains over the Pacific
Northwest, periodic shortwaves rounding the base of the trough would
yield intermittent breezy conditions across southern Nevada,
southeastern California, and northwestern Arizona. Uncertainty
increases heading into next weekend, with indications that a
building ridge over the Southern Plains will begin expanding
westward, potentially ending the slow and gradual cooling trend,
sending temperatures upward once again beginning Saturday. Stay
tuned.

 .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Light
winds of less than 10 knots, following typical diurnal directional
trends, are expected throughout the forecast period. There is a
slight chance (15%) of a few random gusts to 13 knots between 22Z
and 02Z due to the intense thermal heating across the valley. VFR
conditions are expected through Monday with only FEW to SCT clouds
with bases AOA 12kft AGL.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 12Z Forecast Package...A few Isolated
thunderstorms are expected to develop across the southern Great
Basin this afternoon. However, except for KBIH, no impacts are
anticipated at regional terminals. Around KBIH, a few showers and
storms are expected over the Sierra and White Mountains this
afternoon. No direct impacts are expected at KBIH, but there is a
chance of brief gusty outflow winds to 25 knots reaching the field
during the late afternoon. The typical increase in westerly winds
is also expected at KDAG by early evening. Otherwise, light winds
with speeds remaining 12 knots or less are forecast into Monday.
Other than the potential convection mentioned above, VFR conditions
will prevail area-wide with any bases remaining AOA 12kft AGL. &&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
